Hungria: Potato prices have doubled in 2015
Potatoes in Hungary have become twice as expensive as a year earlier, according to ripost.hu. Furthermore, this year’s harvest does not cover the domestic needs.
A year ago, a kilo of potatoes at the cheapest discount stores stood at 59 forints (0.19 Euro), compared to 125 forints (0.40 Euro) today. The better quality goods have stayed far from the HUF 260 (0.84 Euro), although the increase has not been as quick. Rural and metropolitan wholesale markets have also increased prices, to varying degrees depending on the variety.The Agricultural Research Institute reported that the country’s average yield of potatoes has been 10 percent lower this year than in 2014, and that the total 350 thousand tonnes harvested will not be sufficient to meet the domestic needs. This situation is comparable to that of other EU member countries, so a general increase in prices is expected.Furthermore, there are problems with the quality of potatoes. In early November, the National Food Safety Office in Nógrád County found two cases of crops affected by bacterial ring rot.Source: trademagazin.hu
