Bolivia: Potato production reached 1.6 million tons, 15% more than in 2024.

Potato production this year, during the winter and summer seasons, reached a total of 1.6 million tons, a 15% increase compared to 2024, according to a report from the Ministry of Rural Development and Lands.

In an informative video, the Ministry of Agriculture highlighted that potato producers planted 187,920 hectares during the winter and summer campaigns, which represents 18% more than in the previous year.

In addition, production increased by 15% to 1,604,953 tons, with a yield of 8,541 kilos per hectare.

The report also indicates that, in five years, potato imports have dropped by 99%, so consumption of this product is practically exclusively domestically produced.

Last July, the government reported that potato imports in 2024 had dropped from 100,000 tons to 20,000 tons. It also highlighted support programs for certified seeds and the incorporation of new technologies.

Bolivia currently has 2,423 varieties of potatoes, consolidating its role as the world’s center of origin for the crop, according to the National Institute of Agricultural and Forestry Innovation (Iniaf).
