China: Wants potatoes to become a staple food

China will further promote the production of potato so that it becomes one of their staple foods, said the Ministry of Agriculture.

According to a document issued by the ministry, by 2020, China will have more than 6.67 million hectares of potato, 30 percent of which could be processed as a staple food.

Potato consumption will constitute 30 percent of all production at that time, says the text.

To achieve the goal, China will design and plan potato crops according to local resources, they will diversify the variety of staple foods based on the market’s demands, they will improve support for staple food production, and modernize food processing.

In terms of water and land use, the potato industry will not interfere with the growth of the three major Chinese basic grains: rice, wheat, and corn.

China is the largest producer of potatoes in the world as the area devoted to this crop amounts to some 5.6 million hectares.
