Bélgica: All potatoes to be sold to the right destinations this season
The Belgian potato market is picking up and this is partly to do with a boost from the industry. According to Bart Nemegheer, of Aardappelhoeve, the growing trend concerns mostly the waxy varieties and the potatoes for fries.

"Last year, growers planted less of certain varieties and now there is a limited supply. The price of potatoes for fresh consumption is also on the rise."
OptimismThere is currently still plenty of stock left, but Bart is confident that everything this season will be sold out. "We expect new potatoes not to arrive too soon and that’s a good sign. The Spanish production was expected earlier, but due to the impact of frost last week, it has been delayed again and some batches may be lost. We also expect the first new potatoes from Israel in about two weeks. I am optimistic about the future; the market situation is good and the futures market is also improving. As regards exports I don’t have access to as much information, but there also seems to be a good demand."
The Aardappelhoeve has recently opened new production facilities. There is crate storage capacity for 5,000 tonnes built and extra packing space, all complemented with a completely new production line.
