Mexico: Companies secure potato purchases from Constanza producers through contracts

The Minister of Agriculture reaffirmed his commitment to the region’s potato farmers, guaranteeing the purchase of their harvests after reaching agreements with leading companies that secured the acquisition of the production through contracts. The goal is to strengthen and protect the local market.

Minister Francisco Oliverio Espaillat reported that he held meetings with representatives from Frito-Lay and the CCN Group. Both companies expressed their willingness to purchase potatoes and other agricultural products as part of a strategy to support domestic production.

During his visit to the Constanza Valley, the minister met with farmers specializing in potato, onion, and carrot crops, and also engaged in dialogue with cooperatives and associations in the agricultural sector. In this context, he urged producers to focus on developing high-quality crops with high commercial value.

Within the framework of trade relations and agricultural competitiveness, Espaillat emphasized the need to protect domestic production and encouraged farmers to prepare themselves to maximize market opportunities. He stressed that the Ministry will act as a strategic partner by supporting decisions based on market research, technical criteria, and economic sustainability, fostering efficient and organized agriculture.

During the ceremony that marked the official start of the potato harvest in Constanza, the minister emphasized the importance of cultivating varieties with high commercial demand to ensure favorable conditions in the markets. 

“Agriculture must be managed like a business, focusing on producing more at lower costs,” he stated. He also warned that extreme price fluctuations affect both consumers and producers, emphasizing the need to maintain a balance that guarantees profitability without harming any market participant.
