Spain: Castilla y León is positioned as a leader in potato production, contributing nearly 45% of the total volume at the national level.
The Board highlights the importance of the sector and is committed to promoting its modernization to meet market challenges and rising production costs.
The Regional Government of Castile and León has highlighted the region’s prominent role in the production, processing, and marketing of fresh potatoes. This recognition took place during a visit by María González Corral, Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, and Rural Development, to the Patatas Meléndez facilities in Medina del Campo (Valladolid).
Castilla y León has positioned itself as Spain’s leading potato-producing region, with 19,200 hectares under cultivation, representing 38% of the national total, and generating 870,600 tons of potatoes, equivalent to 44.6% of the country’s total production. According to the regional minister, these figures reflect the strength of a sector that is key to the region’s agri-food chain.
The region’s leadership extends beyond agricultural production. It also encompasses processing and marketing, notably with four of the ten largest potato bagging companies in Spain headquartered in Castile and León.
However, the sector faces significant challenges stemming from factors such as changing consumption habits, climate change, and rising production costs. In this context, the Board is committed to fostering modernization, investing in technology and innovation, and strengthening product promotion to ensure its successful adaptation to current market demands.
