Peru: The Potato Festival will bring together producers from the eight provinces of the Arequipa region.
As part of National Potato Day, the Arequipa region will carry out a series of activities aimed at highlighting the importance of this emblematic Andean tuber and promoting the consumption of local production.
The activities are being organized by the Regional Agricultural Management in collaboration with local governments and agricultural producers from various provinces in the region.
The regional agriculture manager, Helard Nina Pachauri, announced that one of the highlights will be the Potato Festival, scheduled for May 30th and 31st in Arequipa. During this event, an exhibition of more than 2,200 potato varieties native to the region will be held, with the participation of farmers from all eight provinces of Arequipa.
Furthermore, he highlighted the economic and productive importance of this crop for the region. He noted that Arequipa has approximately 9,600 potato farmers and a cultivated area exceeding 10,600 hectares, achieving an average yield of 36 tons per hectare. This translates into an estimated regional production of over 208,000 tons annually, solely within the Arequipa region. Authorities emphasized that these activities not only aim to recognize the farmers’ hard work but also to promote family farming and position the potato as one of the country’s most emblematic agricultural and cultural products.
