Líbano: Potatoes heavily hit by hailstorm in Akkar
Heavy hailstorms in Akkar since Sunday afternoon have inflicted severe damage on a number of agricultural products, especially potatoes, which have recorded considerable losses.
The head of the Cooperative Association for Potato Growers in Akkar, Omar Saeed al-Hayek, said that "the impact of the damage caused by hail will certainly be reflected in a decline in production," and has requested a proper assessment of the damages in order to arrange the necessary compensations to the growers.He also made a call to the Minister of Agriculture, Mr Akram Chehayeb, to "stop the import of Egyptian potatoes, as the start of the potato season in Akkar is just around the corner," and urged him to "make an effort to find domestic and foreign markets for the country’s potatoes."
