Canadá: Spuds on the move

ALBERTON -- Prince Edward Island’s 2015 potato crop is moving to the fresh market pretty well at the same pace as last year, suggests P.E.I. Potato Board general manager Greg Donald.

He said movement to the fresh market is up by five per cent and overall movement is on par.

Donald said overall productivity in 2015, partly because of a late start to the growing season, was down about 1.5 per cent from the previous year. He said overall holdings, which also includes the seed and processing sectors, are down one per cent from last year.

Price is also comparable, the general manager said. “It’s just fair,” he acknowledged. “We’d always like to get more and we’d like to see the price higher.”

But he admitted there’s hope for a price boost going forward, pointing out holdings across the country are starting to slide

“With fewer inventories in fewer hands,” he said “we’re hopeful that we’re going to see strengthening of prices from here on out for the rest of the year.

Storage capacity, he said, allows Prince Edward Island growers to remain in the market right into the summertime.

“We’ll see a strengthening of the price going forward here for the remainder of the marketing year,” he predicted.
