Bangladesh: Bangladeshi potato farmers suffer from lack of storage
In Bogra, Bangladesh, thousands of farmers are forced to sell their potatoes at local markets for low prices because of the lack of facilities in which to store their recently harvested crop.

Most of the farmers expressed their dissatisfaction over inadequate storage facilities, claiming that those who are high up politically have major holdings in cold storages. The growers of the area are suffering when they go to market, as the wholesalers who hoard potato for more profit, are keeping them in storage and putting potato farmers in a difficult situation which sees them forced to sell their produce for low prices.
Booking of the storage was completed in January and most of the potatoes have been packed in jute sacks as they could not be placed in cold storage. When contacted, Deputy Director of DAE Chandi Das said storage capacity in the district is 60 per cent of the total production and the district has a target to get 0.7 million tonnes of potato from 77,500 hectares of land. But farmers cultivated potato on 88,550 hectares.
