Polonia: Potato prices to drop even further
Despite the already low prices of potatoes in Poland, these are likely to decline even further, warn experts of the Institute of Agricultural and Food Economics.

The researchers of the Institute reported that because of the increase in production, potato prices in Poland are low when compared to those of Western European markets. In the first months of the 2016/17 campaign, with the exception of July, the price of potatoes at the farmers’ markets have been from one to several percentage points lower than a year earlier, and in the wholesale there has been a decrease in the order of tens of percents.Despite this, prices may continue to fall. And so, the average prices of potatoes at markets for the entire season could amount to approximately 87 złoty/dt (19.64 Euro/dt), and will be about 13 percent lower than in the 2015/16 season.
The average price level of potatoes in the wholesale markets could amount to approximately 52 złoty/dt (11.74 Euro/dt), compared to 78 złoty/dt (17.61 Euro/dt) in the previous season and the average of 65 złoty/dt (14.68 Euro/dt) for the last five years.Such low prices may discourage growers to increase their production. Scientists from the Institute predict that in 2017, the acreage devoted to potatoes in Poland is likely to decrease to approximately 300 thousand hectares. With average weather conditions, the harvest could then amount to about 8.7 million tonnes, i.e. approximately 5 percent less than in 2016.
