Grecia: Greek potatoes struggling due to 30 days of continuous rain

The Greek potato season isn’t going all too well. According to Nasos Zafirakis, director of Zafirakis Fruits, the weather made it difficult during the past months:

“In Greece, the situation for winter potatoes isn’t very good. In terms of quantities planted, there’s been a reduction of 30 per cent compared to last year. In the start of the growing season, the weather was a very big help, however this changed in the last month.”

The rain has ensured both lower production, as well as quality issues for the Greek potatoes, Zafirakis states. “Over the past 30 days it has continuously rained, which resulted in clumps of potatoes found completely under water. This means they have a lower production, but also a quality problem for the Greek potatoes.”
