India: State of Gujarat expects bumper onion crop in March
In March, a bumper crop of new onions is expected to arrive in the markets of Gujarat state.

Cultivation was 200 percent more than average this year and 146 percent more than the previous year. This means that this year consumers, especially in the summer marriage season, will not be shedding tears while buying onions in bulk.
Amreli and Bhavnagar in Saurashtra are the two major districts that cultivate onions. Farmers here cultivate 40 percent white onions and 60 percent red and yellow onions that are consumed in households and restaurants. The white variety is exported after dehydration.
A farmer of Savarkundla in Amreli district said: “This year, farmers have sufficient water storage because of good rains last year. The groundwater during summer remained unused as there was no electricity due to the cyclone and so, we also have good groundwater this time. Hence, farmers have cultivated onions this year.”
New crops have already started trickling in Mahuva and Bhavnagar market yards, the state’s biggest mandis for onion trading. According to the traders, around 50,000 to 60,000 bags each of 50kg red onion and 25,000 bags of white onion have already reached the market.
