Argentina: Lamb Weston will begin exporting its potato chip production from Mar del Plata.

The multinational will soon begin large-scale production for dispatch through the docks of the local maritime terminal.

While finalizing details of the plant’s launch in the General Savio Industrial Park in Mar del Plata, the multinational Lamb Weston will begin exporting its first shipments of French fries and frozen foods to the world from the local port in the final weeks of July.

The information was confirmed by Emilio Bustamante, head of Container Terminal 2 (TC2), in statements to Extra, the radio and streaming channel of 0223. According to him, Lamb Weston plans to export ten thousand TEUs per year and the first containers would be dispatched at the end of July via the container ship Platón - 170 meters long and 28 meters wide - of the French shipping company CMA-CGM that since May of last year has been connecting Mar del Plata with Santos, Brazil.

The CMA CGM shipping company will connect Mar del Plata with Santos once a week.

The Port of Santos has significant influence on the foreign market and is considered the link between South America and Europe and Asia. With the investment from Lamb Weston, Bustamante expressed confidence that the operations that are carried out every two weeks could be carried out once a week.

The head of Container Terminal 2 has been leading negotiations with the multinational’s executives for some time to define operational and logistics tasks for exporting production through the Port of Mar del Plata.

In addition to Lamb Weston’s frozen products, the route is also used by various regional brands dedicated to the production of construction materials, coffee, kiwis, meat, and other items. Meanwhile, Maersk, the other shipping company operating in the local port, limits its cargo to fish only.

As reported, following a $300 million investment, Lamb Weston plans to inaugurate its plant in the Industrial Park on October 6 with a grand, closed-door event marking the opening of the factory and featuring the participation of prominent political leaders from Mar del Plata, Argentina, and the United States.

The factory, which will begin producing potato chips and derivatives in the coming days, will be divided into three engineering levels: on one hand, the large module with the plant; on the other, the warehouses for product storage; and finally, a space for future expansion (which will have a floor plan identical to the first).

According to estimates, the cold storage facility that will store the finished potatoes will be the largest in Argentina, with almost one hectare of surface area. Between 70% and 75% of the finished potatoes are expected to be shipped abroad.
