Peru: Native potatoes from Ayacucho seek designation of origin.
It is part of the international AL-INVEST Verde DPI project, funded by the European Union and implemented by the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO).
With the goal of strengthening the appreciation of sustainable local products through the strategic use of intellectual property tools, the National Institute for the Defense of Competition and the Protection of Intellectual Property (Indecopi) will provide specialized advice to native potato producers in the Ayacucho region to help them obtain official recognition of a designation of origin or geographical indication, as appropriate.
The official launch of this program took place in the Ayacucho region, where a technical mission from Indecopi’s Distinctive Signs Directorate arrived to hold meetings with stakeholders and visit emblematic cultivation areas in Condorccocha and Pariahuanca.
As part of the event, a public presentation of the project was held, which included a display of more than 300 varieties of native potatoes. The activities brought together producers associated with the Rural Potato Coordinator of Peru (Corpapa) and various local stakeholders linked to this important value chain.
The project includes the implementation of an eight-month mentoring program, which includes training for producers and public sector representatives involved in the promotion of native potatoes in Ayacucho. The objective is to provide them with the knowledge and tools to formulate and submit applications for protection as a designation of origin or geographical indication, as appropriate.
