Belgium and Germany buy fewer Dutch potatoes

Compared to last year, Belgium and Germany in particular purchased fewer table potatoes from the Netherlands. This is evident from export figures published last week by the Dutch Potato Organisation (NAO).

Of the table potatoes harvested in the Netherlands in 2024, 711,500 tons have been sold abroad up to and including June. This is almost 90,000 tons less than the same period last year.

The lower export volume is almost entirely attributable to disappointing sales figures for table potatoes to Belgium and Germany. Belgian chip manufacturers, in particular, are looking to cover part of their raw material needs with potatoes purchased in the Netherlands.

With 383,000 tons, Belgium remains by far the most important export destination for Dutch table potatoes. However, last year, the export volume to our southern neighbors was 78,000 tons higher. Germany bought 50,000 tons of Dutch potatoes this year, compared to 65,000 tons for the 2023 harvest.

While export volumes in the European Union and the rest of Europe fell by around 100,000 tons, African countries did buy more Dutch potatoes. A total of 78,600 tons were shipped to Africa through June, 9,000 tons more than the previous year. Senegal was the largest buyer, with 31,000 tons of potatoes.
