Ecuador (Saraguro): Field day to evaluate the yield of the INIAP-Cañari potato variety.
With the aim of strengthening local production systems and promoting the use of varieties, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG), through the Technical Office of Saraguro, held a field day in the community of Jaratenta
The event, held in this community corresponding to the San Pablo de Tenta parish, was organized to evaluate the performance of the INIAP-Cañari potato variety, characterized by its resistance to the disease known as "purple tip."
The activity was carried out in coordination with the National Institute of Agricultural Research (INIAP), the Decentralized Autonomous Government of the Tenta Parish, the Political Authority, and local producers, as part of the collaborative effort promoted by the MAG to foster technological innovation in short-cycle crops.
During the technical activity, practices related to planting management, fertilization planning, phytosanitary management, seed production for future plantings, and post-harvest techniques were addressed, with the goal of ensuring crop sustainability and improving field yields.
"The INIAP-Cañari variety has proven to be a solid alternative for areas with purple top disease, thanks to its genetic resistance. With these initiatives, we seek to encourage producers to adopt technologies that reduce losses and improve the profitability of their crops," said Carlos Barros, a technician at the MAG Technical Office in Saraguro.
The event also allowed producers to experience firsthand the results obtained from the demonstration plot, which has become a tool for practical learning and local validation of agricultural technologies.
