Spain: Xinzo’s sour potato outperforms other varieties
In the Xinzo area, one of the best potatoes in Spain is grown, also recognized internationally.

It is the sour variety, which emerged as the winner of the first edition of the Tasting-Contest of Pobos Producers of Potato, held within the framework of the Alimagro fair, which is currently taking place in the capital of A Limia.
The competition, sponsored by the Association of Potato Producers, was created with the aim of recognizing and rewarding the quality of this fundamental tuber in Spanish gastronomy. This year, a total of six varieties from different parts of the country competed, including Spunta (Sanlúcar de Barrameda, Cádiz), Soprano (Cartaxena, Murcia), Donata (Medina del Campo, Valladolid), Kennebec (Coristanco, A Coruña), Cimega (La Rinconada, Seville), and the aforementioned Agria, grown in Xinzo de Limia.
The jury, composed of industry experts and with the active participation of a public jury, evaluated aspects such as the texture, flavor, and visual appearance of each sample. The Limiana Agria variety won with a total score of 144.8 points, surpassing the Spunta variety, which obtained 138 points, and the Soprano variety, which scored 121.5.
The organizers, however, regretted the absence of varieties from the Canary Islands, a circumstance resulting from the current ban on the movement of potatoes within the archipelago for plant health reasons. Even so, they are confident they will be able to count on their participation in future editions, given the renowned quality of their traditional crops.
The celebration didn’t end there. Within the same framework of activities, Xinzo tasted this Saturday what is now the largest omelet made in A Limia, surpassing last year’s. A total of 1,700 eggs, 450 kilos of Kennebec potatoes, and 40 kilos of onions were used, representing an increase of 100 kilos of potatoes and 200 eggs compared to the previous edition. The result was a record-breaking recipe that delighted the public and once again reinforced the region’s connection with one of its star products.
