Bolivia (La Paz): An irrigation system will be built in the highlands to improve potato production.

In the Cruz Pata community of Ancoraimes, in the Omasuyus province of La Paz, a sprinkler irrigation system will be implemented to mitigate the effects of climate change and strengthen potato production.

Nancy Tarqui, national coordinator of the Support for Agricultural Production in the Face of Climate Change (Aprocam) program, reported that the irrigation system "solar panel pumping and improvement of water sources with a focus on climate change for potato production" will require an investment of more than 200,000 bolivianos.

The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), through its RURAL ACCESS Program, will finance the project, which will reduce the effects of the drought in the region and increase potato production from 64 to 77 tons per year, improving the income of 22 farming families, according to an institutional bulletin.

"Ensuring food security in our country depends largely on providing the right conditions for our small producers, and that means ensuring a constant supply of water in regions hit hard by drought as a result of climate change," he explained.

Furthermore, more projects of this type are being developed in other regions of the country, working in coordination with international organizations such as IFAD to channel resources and strengthen the resilient capacities of small producers.
