US: Mexico is positioned as the main customer of fresh American potatoes
The full opening of the Mexican market to fresh US potatoes in May 2022 marked a turning point for bilateral horticultural trade. Since then, exports have shown sustained growth.

From farms to supermarket shelves, a delegation of Mexican importers, wholesalers, and retail representatives learned firsthand about the U.S. fresh potato production chain during the Reverse Trade Mission (RTM) 2025, organized by Potatoes USA in Colorado.
The recently developed mission brought together buyers, category managers, and distributors from different states in Mexico, which currently represents the largest export market for fresh potatoes from the U.S.
It’s worth noting that the reverse trade mission concept allows international buyers to travel to the exporting country to directly observe the production, packaging, and marketing processes, thus strengthening business ties with local suppliers.
For a week, participants toured farm fields, storage plants, and packing plants in the San Luis Valley, one of the country’s main producing regions. The program also included visits to agricultural research centers and tours of retail locations in Denver, where visitors were able to evaluate marketing strategies and product presentations.
Consolidation of relationships between US suppliers and the Mexican retail sector
The itinerary included a producer panel and technical seminars on consumer trends, nutrition, and flavor profiles, as well as networking sessions aimed at strengthening business relationships between U.S. suppliers and the Mexican retail sector.
"Since participating in the October 2024 edition, we have doubled our imports of American potatoes, primarily russet potatoes, and are now looking to incorporate yellow and purple potatoes into our offering," commented a Mexican retail representative who participated in the program.
The full opening of the Mexican market to fresh US potatoes in May 2022 marked a turning point for bilateral horticultural trade. Since then, exports have shown sustained growth, and Mexico has established itself as the main destination for fresh US potatoes for the period July 2024-June 2025.
Blair Richardson, CEO of Potatoes USA, has stated in various forums that these types of missions are essential for expanding technical and trade cooperation and promoting innovation in the value chain. "Field visits allow importers to understand the safety, traceability, and sustainability practices that distinguish American potatoes."
