Alemania: We expect a slightly better potato harvest this year
The situation on the potato market in Germany and Europe was rather dramatic in 2018: heat and drought had caused a small harvest and quality problems.
Many had feared that growers would expand their acreage for 2019 to compensate for potential losses, thus providing a surplus when more temperate weather would return. This did not happen, according to Kai Roth, the manager of the Rainer Bausch GmbH, "We are currently seeing a slightly better crop than last year. Due to the early and great demand for German new potatoes this year, I do not currently assess the situation much differently from last year."
Also this summer had been hot and dry, so the yields are different in different areas. "Impact on quality will be seen over the next few weeks, when the potatoes are all in the warehouse." Priced potatoes are at €16-18 per 100 kg, and rising with the beginning of sales from the warehouses.
The main crop of potato and onion wholesale producers is due to be completed in the next few days.
