Europa: NEPG warns of risk of potato overproduction in Europe in 2020
The North-Western European Potato Growers (NEPG), an association that brings together potato producers from the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Germany and the United Kingdom,
warns that the expansion of the European acreage devoted to potato cultivation entails a risk of overproduction in 2020, which could break the balance between supply and demand and push prices down.
In the last five years, the acreage devoted to potatoes for consumption has increased by 9% in these areas, reaching 613,946 hectares in 2019. The increase in France is particularly noteworthy, with a 14.3% rise. For its part, Belgium recorded a 10.6% growth.
In 2019, the potato production in these countries has reached 26.9 million tons. This is 1.8% more than the average of the last five years.
