China: Chinese potato export is likely to grow this year as the international potato price reaches record high
The global potato price increased because the production volumes in major production areas declined. The price is already higher than in the last 6 years.
The Chinese potato price is lower than the global average. The global price rise therefore stimulates the expansion of potato production in China. Chinese potato export is likely to increase this year as long as the domestic market remains the same. Some people in the industry point out that the Chinese potato production volume is expected to grow by 3.1% in 2020.
The Chinese market conditions were quite good for potatoes in 2019. Potato farmers therefore expanded the surface area devoted to potato plantation this year. The production volume is thus expected to grow and if domestic market demand remains similar, the price is likely to fall in comparison with 2019.
The Chinese potato price is lower than the global average, which benefits Chinese potato export. Chinese potato trade is likely to grow this year. As for import, the Chinese potato industry has a growing capacity to process potatoes and industrial development is quick. The domestic potato industry is therefore able to compete with import potatoes in terms of product quality, which means that import gradually declines. As for export, China is one of the largest potato producers. International competition is fierce, but China has a distinct advantage because the price of Chinese potatoes is relatively low.
