A serious potato disease has been keeping many farmers awake at night for years. Growers had to meet strict regulations that made it difficult to export vegetables outside the country.
The total Belgian potato stock of harvest 2024 was estimated at over 2.5 million tonnes in early February. This is comparable to the multi-year average. However, the share of free potatoes is larger than in previous years.
According to the Agribusiness Analytical Center and China’s General Administration of Customs, potato imports from China to Russia increased fivefold in 2024, reaching 46,700 tons, 37,400 tons more than in 2023.
During a press conference, the director of Plant Health, Rosa Lazala, announced that the disease maintains “its status as a quarantine pest absent in the country,” due to phytosanitary surveillance and the country’s climatic conditions.
