A federal judge has approved search warrants to take samples from fields in southeast Idaho after farmers refused to allow federal authorities to check for a microscopic potato pest.
"The potato season has gone well regarding both quality and yields, which are superior to 2015," reports Antonio Ruggiero; a company that produces and commercialises around 100 thousand tons of potatoes and carrots every year.
Ralph Schwartz, vice president of marketing, sales and innovation at Idaho Falls, Idaho-based Potandon Produce LLC, said this surplus of potatoes has flooded the early market and led to low pricing.
Prices are low and right now there’s no market for the surplus production.
The potato harvest is more or less complete for another year and yields are expected to be back close to 10%, according to IFA Potato Committee Chairman Eddie Doyle.
